R.I.P. Mac Davis

Oh, no, another one. Mac Davis has died at age 78.

Singer-songwriter Mac Davis has passed away after open heart surgery. Davis’ biggest hit as a singer was 1972’s Baby, Don’t Get Hooked On Me.

And while Mac worked as an actor, recording artist and hosted a TV variety show, his most lasting work is that of a songwriter. Just a few of his tunes include:

Don’t Cry Daddy, A Little Less Conversation, Memories & In The Ghetto (all recorded by Elvis) along with I Believe In Music, Stop And Smell The Roses and Watching Scotty Grow.

Its interesting that Mac Davis and Helen Reddy have died both on the same day and at the same age. Both artists were quite well-known during the 1970s, but unlike many of their peers (Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton), their reputations seemed not to be acknowledged in later years.

Both artists penned songs that struck a chord back in the day…In The Ghetto was a surprisingly serious hit for Elvis that could easily serve as an anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement now, while I Am Woman was certainly an anthem back in 72, but seemed to have not been taken seriously later.

That may change as the film, I Am Woman, a dramatization of Reddy’s life is about to hit cinemas this month.

So shed a tear, and investigate the work of both of these (almost) forgotten artists. For a time, they really made a difference.
