Marcia Hines is Australian musical royalty. She first came Down Under from her hometown of Boston at 16 to perform in the musical Hair. And after giving birth to her songstress daughter Deni the following year, she found work and family seemed to compel her to stay. So much so, that she officially became an Australian citizen in 1994.
Her life story is recorded in the 2001 biography, Diva: The Life of Marcia Hines, and that title alone gives some idea of the stature of this velvety vocalist, actress, and television personality in her chosen country.
New Zealand is lucky to have Marcia contributing to the Christchurch Arts Festival ( Sept 6- 17 ) and to Auckland LIVE’s International Cabaret Season ( Sept 21 – Oct 1) .
Her show is called Velvet. It has been variously described as a divine discotheque circus and “pure unadulterated fabulousness” (City Hub) .
Perhaps that last phrase also sums up Marcia herself, as Liz Gunn found when they met at The 13th Floor Studio.
