Auckland-based band Ghost Wave are often compared to The Clean and The Chills, but the dense, slightly hallucinatory tracks with a touch of 70s jangle are also subtly reminiscent of Donovan or Strawberry Alarm Clock.
The mysterious band members (known only as Matt, Eammon, Rikki and Mike) have released a hearty seven track sampler. Beginning with a chorus of electric crickets on Sounds, classic pop melodies soon emerge from beneath dense layers of sound. The gentle harmonies of Gold and laid back tone of Shade contrast with upbeat dance number Hippy and the noise rock elements of Mood Ring. Slightly impenetrable but lush and atmospheric, these seven songs will be perfect on your iPod as you head home at dusk during these brisk Autumn evenings.
Ghost Wave encapsulate the best of 70s psychedelic pop and 80s indie punk but still sound as fresh as a daisy and as forward-thinking as a war strategist. I’d be disappointed if I didn’t see them on the line-up for Laneway 2012.
