New Song Of The Day: Emily Fairlight – The Escape

Record company blurb:

Wellington-based poet and alt-folk songstress Emily Fairlight is thrilled to release her brand new single, ‘The Escape’, accompanied by a nostalgic official video.

Recorded with Doug Walseth of The Cat’s Eye Studio in Austin, Texas, and featuring Cully Symington (Bright Eyes and Okkervil River) and multi-instrumentalist Kullen Fuchs, ‘The Escape’ offers up achingly honest and beautifully-penned lyrics delivered with a melancholic melody and Emily’s breathtakingly haunting vocals.

The video, directed by Julian Vares and written by Emily herself, is reminiscent of New Zealand summers in the 1980’s and a time of innocence and simplicity.

“The video I hoped would inspire a sense of nostalgia, about how much easier things were when we were kids, hence the temporary escape from the responsibilities of adult life.
I guess I see myself as someone who didn’t fully grow up, never bought the house or had the kids, and that in itself can be a kind of purgatory. So the video is like a brief insight to those two different lives, how they relate, and how they separate”
– Emily Fairlight

Emily has been composing and performing for over a decade, playing throughout New Zealand, Australia and the USA. With a new band featuring Ben Cole (The DatsunsJoint Chiefs) on drums,Andrew Bain (Fur PatrolSvelte) on bass, and occasionally Finn Johannson on guitar, Emily is ready to release her sophomore album mid-2018.
