Acclaimed Jazz Vocalist Kurt Elling To Perform One NZ Show In Christchurch

Grammy winner Kurt Elling is headlining the 2018 Cavell Leitch New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival in Christchurch this May.
In association with the US Embassy, the festival presents the acclaimed American jazz singer and his ensemble performing one show in New Zealand at The Piano in Christchurch on Saturday 26 May.

Festival Director Jodi Wright says Kurt Elling is among the world’s foremost jazz vocalists. “He has a huge international following and we are thrilled to welcome him to Christchurch.”

The New York Times said ‘Elling is the standout male vocalist of our time.’ He won the DownBeat Critics Poll for fourteen consecutive years and has been named Male Singer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association eight times. Grammy nominated over a dozen times, Elling has also been honoured with international jazz awards, including the prestigious Edison Jazz Oeuvreprijs, Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Kurt Elling’s rich baritone spans four octaves. His repertoire includes original compositions and modern interpretations of standards, combining inspired improvisation, scatting, spoken word, and poetry,” Jodi Wright says.

Elling has toured constantly throughout his career delighting audiences around the world, and he has collaborated with top orchestras and ensembles including the Branford Marsalis Quartet.

The five-day Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz and Blues Festival kicks off in Christchurch on Wednesday 23 May and runs until Sunday 27 May.
